A Guide to Christmas Tree Safety

Advice From Your Trusted Landscaping and Tree Service Company

With the holidays quickly approaching, it is time to start decorating your home for Christmas. However, when it comes to setting up your tree, there are several safety tips you must keep in mind to ensure this Christmas season is memorable for all the right reasons. Decorating your Christmas tree can be one of the most carefree and enjoyable parts of the holiday. However, be sure to exercise caution during the process to prevent fires and other tree related injuries. Read below to learn more about Christmas tree safety from your professional landscaping service. We want you and your family to enjoy a safe and happy holiday season.

4 Christmas Tree Safety Tips

Christmas trees are a perfect addition to any home during the holidays. Each is beautiful and unique, but a decorative tree can pose a serious risk if you do not follow proper precautions during set up. Here are a few safety tips for this holiday season:

  1. Buy Fresh Trees: When shopping for a Christmas tree, select one that is green and fresh. Look for a pine or spruce tree because they have flexible needles that bend, not break. In addition, needles that are hard to pull off are indicative of a fresh tree. Finally, inspect the trunk and ensure that it is sticky with sap. A fresh tree is less likely to become a fire hazard. If you are buying an artificial tree, look for a “fire resistant” label.
  2. Tree Placement: Once you have selected the right tree, cut off roughly 2 inches from the base and place it in a secure, water-holding stand. Make sure you keep water in the stand at all times to prevent your tree from drying out. Avoid placing your tree near fireplaces, radiators, or other sources that emit heat. Do not place your tree where it blocks doorways or exits.
  3. Inspect Your Lights: For Christmas trees, only use indoor lights that do not emit heat, such as LED lights. If you are using multiple strands of lights, plug them into various circuits around your home so you do not overload a single electrical outlet. Check for broken sockets, frayed wires, and loose bulbs. Discard and replace any damaged lights immediately. Lastly, ensure that your Christmas tree lights are unplugged in the evenings before bed.
  4. Ornamental Attachments: Take proper precautions when hanging ornaments from your Christmas trees. Use a ladder or step stool for out of reach places in order to avoid knocking your tree over. Fragile ornaments should not be on the lower part of your tree where children and pets have easy access. Additionally, lighted candles or flammable items should never be placed anywhere on your Christmas tree.

Common Types of Evergreens in the Northeast Region

Discover What Makes Each Tree Unique

When you think of attractive trees, you can’t help but think of evergreens. Unlike deciduous trees that transform with each season, evergreens are unchanging but that doesn’t make them any less beautiful. Rather, thanks to their consistent nature, evergreens are the perfect trees to plant on your property as they will ensure your yard maintains some visual interest, even in the middle of winter. Not only are these trees aesthetically pleasing, they also provide wildlife, like birds and small animals, a safe place to take shelter in every season.

Types of Evergreens

If you are looking for a simple way to enhance your landscape, planting evergreens is a good place to start. Even if you don’t believe you have a green thumb, you can take comfort in knowing that evergreens are extremely sturdy trees. They thrive even in poor soil conditions since they possess the unique ability to continue processing any food that is available throughout the year. Here are some of the most common evergreens found in the Northeast region:

  • Pine Trees: When identifying the types of evergreens, pine trees are usually what come to mind first. While most of these trees are cone bearing and have long needles, pine trees are not all the same. For instance, the Eastern White Pine is a fast-growing species that can reach 80 feet in height and beyond, which makes it an ideal choice if you desire more shaded areas around your property. Conversely, the Pinyon Pine is a slow-growing tree that typically only reaches between 12-15 feet in height. Therefore, these types of evergreens are excellent for growing in pots or rock gardens.
  • Spruce Trees: Unlike Pine trees, Spruce trees grow shorter needles and hanging cones. Some of the most popular Spruce tree options include the Norway Spruce, Colorado Blue Spruce and White Spruce. The Norway Spruce has dark green foliage and thrives in cool conditions. The Colorado Blue Spruce trees are known for their pyramid-like shape and blue-gray needles. Both types of trees can grow to reach 60 feet, unlike the White Spruce which is ideal for growing in pots or along the perimeter of your home.
  • Fir Trees: Some of the most common Fir trees that belong to the evergreen family are the White Fir, Douglas Fir and Fraser Fir. White Firs appear to have a silvery gray-green foliage and look especially attractive when planted alongside darker colored evergreens. Both the Douglas and Fraser Fir trees are the perfect evergreen to have in your home as a Christmas tree.
