How to Care for Your Outdoor Flowers in the Summer

A Guide to Summer Plant Care

The heat of the summer is finally upon us! If you haven’t already begun the process, it’s time to help your plants adjust to the rising temperatures. While there are some species of plants like succulents and cacti that thrive in dry and sunny conditions, most plants require extra care to ensure they survive the summer heat. Plants, like people, can become sun burnt and dehydrated so it’s important to adapt your plant care routine to your plant’s seasonal needs. After all, healthy and beautiful flowers are not only essential for enhancing your curb appeal but their appearance can also have a significant effect on your overall well-being.

5 Tips for Summer Plant Care

No matter what the weather is like outside, your garden will always benefit from a little TLC. Nevertheless, if you want to keep your flowers flourishing in the higher temperatures, you’ll be required to follow a few more special rules.

Read on to learn about our favourite flower care tips for summer:

  • Water Deeply: Whether it’s the summer or any other time of year, adequate water is essential for keeping your flowers and plants alive. The best way to water is to apply water slowly and for a longer period of time to ensure that moisture reaches at least 12 inches into the soil. A slower watering application allows the water to actually reach the roots rather than run off the surface of the soil. During extreme heat waves, sensitive plants will require more irrigation.
  • Avoid Over-Watering: As important as it is to ensure your flowers and plants get enough water, over-watering can also cause the same symptoms as under-watering and result in wilted leaves and petals. To avoid this and potential root disease, poke your fingers an inch into the soil. If it feels dry to the touch, follow the deep watering method and make sure your pots feature drainage holes.
  • Use a Fertilizer: While it’s not always necessary, using a fertilizer can help your plants continue to bloom despite the summer heat. If you choose a liquid fertilizer, be sure to apply it every 10-14 days throughout the growing period. If you need to cover a large area, certain fertilizers can be mixed into a watering can.
  • Plant in the Shade: While sunlight is an essential component of flower growth, too much direct sunlight can cause the moisture in the leaves and petals to evaporate too quickly. The result will be burned and dried out flowers. Instead, be conscious of where you are planting your flowers and try to ensure that they also are under some shade during the day.
  • Try the Container Method: One way to ensure your flowers last throughout the summer is to plant them in containers instead of in the ground. This way, if you have poor or rocky soil, it won’t be a problem and taking care of your flowers will be much easier since weeds are less likely to grow out of control in a flower pot.
